What Flood Zone Is Your Home In?

Type an address and we'll read FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer at that point: the zone, whether it's a Special Flood Hazard Area, and what that means for your lender and your insurance.

Enter a property address

We geocode the address and read the FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer at that point, the same data behind the official flood maps. Works for any address in Maryland, DC, Virginia or the rest of the U.S.

Include the city and state. The lookup checks the point FEMA maps at your address; for a large lot the house may sit in a different zone than the edge of the parcel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what flood zone my house is in?

Enter the address above, or use FEMA's Flood Map Service Center at msc.fema.gov. If you have a mortgage, the Standard Flood Hazard Determination Form in your closing documents states the zone the lender used.

What is the difference between Zone X and Zone AE?

Zone X (unshaded) is minimal hazard, outside the 500-year floodplain, and lenders do not require flood insurance. Zone AE is the 100-year floodplain with a published base flood elevation; lenders must require flood insurance on federally backed loans. Shaded Zone X sits in between.

Is this the same as my lender's flood determination?

It reads the same FEMA data, but a lender's determination is made by a flood zone determination company and may consider the structure's exact footprint and map effective dates. If the two disagree, an Elevation Certificate from a surveyor settles it.

Why does the lookup say unavailable?

The lookup calls FEMA's and the Census Bureau's public services live. During maintenance windows or on some networks they don't respond. Use the FEMA link provided, or leave the address in the quote box and we'll run it for you.
